Grand Prize. 2009 NSS Space Settlement Art Contest. "After the Storm" by Raymond Cassel.
It has now been 40 years since humans last set foot on the moon. It was
assumed that the Apollo Program would be followed up by a Lunar colony
and manned missions to Mars in the 80's and 90's. Cost overruns and lack
of political will killed the dream until the rise of a private space
industry and private manned efforts provide badly needed competition to
government space programs. Now with private sector alternatives, the
dream of spreading humanity beyond Earth is finally within reach.
Mars may be the best first step in making Humanity a multi-planet
species. It has all of the raw materials needed to supply an industrial
infrastructure with existing technology. It possibly has enough gravity
to mitigate the health effects of low gravity allowing humans to survive
and reproduce on its surface. It is our best hope for establishing a
self-sufficient colony beyond Earth in our lifetimes. Most importantly,
the lessons we learn on Mars will help us to live among the asteroids
and beyond.
The Mars track will begin with a look at the history of Mars exploration
on Thursday morning, followed by coverage of current efforts at studying
the Red Planet. Friday will feature presentations on how to survive and
establish a civilization on Mars. On Saturday morning featured speaker
Robert Zubrin, founder of the Mars Society will speak about "Mars in Our
Time". On Sunday morning, professional explorers Tom and Tina Sjogren
will present their plan for getting humans to Mars.
