Space commerce will be the driver of space settlement. The
business/policy track examines the businesses that are leading the way
to profitable space enterprise, and the policy issues that affect their
ability to succeed. This track aims to be a teaching track on the
principles and practices of successful space business.

Deep Space Industries was formed one year ago at ISDC when experienced
technical and management leaders sat down together to formulate a plan
for the prospecting, retrieval and processing of space resources,
starting with asteroids but encompassing lunar and Martian moon
resources as well. DSI unveiled its plan in January 2013, one that
starts with low-cost cubesat-based spacecraft to carry out the
prospecting phase.

Shackleton Energy was founded from the space, mining, energy and
exploration sectors to establish an expanding propellant depot
architecture across the inner solar system. Following successful robotic
precursor missions, our industrial astronauts combined with robotic
mining capability will make first landing on the South Pole of the Moon
by mid-2019 to begin deliveries of propellant to our first depots in
early 2020. Customers, partners, technologies, and most importantly, the
investor classes aligned with the risk profiles involved have been
identified and all the components for a viable business are available.
Infrastructure investment in space programs has traditionally been the
province of governments, but sustainable expansion requires commercial
leadership and this is now the responsibility of dynamic new industry.
The technologies and know-how are ready to be applied. Launch services
to LEO are available and the industrial capability exists in the
aerospace, mining and energy sectors to enable Shackleton Energy to
build an in-orbit and Lunar infrastructure.

The history of exploration of new lands, science and technologies has
always entailed risk to the health and lives of the explorers. Yet, when
it comes to exploring and developing the high frontier of space, the
harshest frontier ever, the highest value is apparently not the
accomplishment of those goals, but of eliminating the possibility of
injury or death of the humans carrying them out. Our approach to safety
has been fundamentally irrational, expensive and even dangerous, while
generating minimal accomplishment for maximal cost. A more balanced
approach is proposed here.

Gary Bickford
Audit Analytics
Gary Bickford has combined long term professional involvement in
technology development companies with a lifelong personal interest in
space and belief in the future of humans in space. In late 2010 and
early 2011, Mr. Bickford recognized that the time had come where it was
now possible for commercial enterprises and individuals to work together
to open the next phase, commercial near-earth and lunar operations. The
opportunity now exists for enterprising individuals and organizations to
construct the �bleeding edge' businesses that will in the future become
the basis for space habitation, manufacturing and commerce - the orbital
'Silicon Valley' is here. Mr. Bickford believes that among the
companies who participate in this endeavor today, will be the core
institutions for the future of humans in space, and wants to help make
this happen. Mr. Bickford's career has been in computers and software,
including his first startup, one of the first image scanning and
vectorizing companies, where he was the inventor and founding VP of R&D
for AUDRE, Inc., which built systems for scanning and converting maps
and engineering drawings into CAD data. AUDRE went public in the middle
1980s, achieving listing on the AMEX �emerging companies' list and a
capitalization in excess of $250 million. Later Mr. Bickford became a
Project Scientist at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute and worked at
CMU spin-off companies including RedZone Robotics (Dr. Red Whittaker's
nuclear robotics company), where as Control Systems Manager, he won and
managed an SBIR Phase II $500,000 research grant. Mr. Bickford is
presently employed at Audit Analytics, which performs data mining and
information extraction regarding publicly held companies and other
entities, providing data and services to accountants, government
regulators and investment entities.
Richard Godwin
President, CEO and Director, Zero Gravity Solutions Inc.
Richard Godwin is president and CEO of Zero Gravity Solutions, Inc., a
new public company committed to becoming the first company to
industrialize Low Earth Orbit. Zero Gravity Solutions, Inc. has the
capability of producing the first high value � low volume products from
space that can ONLY be manufactured in long-term microgravity. While
working recently as a business consultant for SpaceX on their nascent
DragonLab program, Mr. Godwin was introduced to very powerful technology
in the form of IP created by John Wayne Kennedy and proven on six NASA
sponsored flights of science payloads to ISS. As a result of that
introduction, Mr. Godwin accepted his current position as president and
CEO of Zero Gravity Solutions, Inc., which now owns this IP. Mr. Godwin
will be presenting his company's technology at the Business Track
session on Saturday.
Mr. Godwin is well known to ISDC, as he was an at large NSS Board
Director for eight years. He has been a space advocate for over 20
years and is a one of the founders and the president of Apogee Books, a
publishing company with an award-winning line of space books.
David Gump
CEO, Deep Space Industries Inc.
David co-founded three companies in commercial space, most recently
Astrobotic Technology for the exploration and development of lunar
resources. Astrobotic in its first four years gathered $12 million in
NASA technology development contracts and put a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch
vehicle under contract for its first mission. NASA also recognized
David's expertise with multiple invitations to deliver presentations at
its conferences and workshops including the agency's 2012 Global
Exploration Conference. As president of Transformational Space Corp.
(t/Space), David led a team that NASA selected to provide it with advice
and technology development for its return to the Moon. NASA then
selected t/Space as a finalist for the Commercial Orbital Transportation
Services (COTS) program that SpaceX and Orbital Sciences won in the next
round. In addition, David negotiated and directed the first TV
commercial filmed on the International Space Station, as well as
creating space entertainment software sold by Walmart, Best Buy, and the
Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.
Doug Griffith
Co-founder and General Counsel, Golden Spike Company
Doug Griffith is a co-founder and general counsel of Golden Spike
Company. His 16-year legal career has focused exclusively on the
aviation and commercial human spaceflight industries. Prior to
attending law school Doug received his degree in Aerospace Engineering
from the University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduation he joined the
U.S. Marine Corps, flying AH-1W attack helicopters in Operation Desert
Storm and earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon graduating from
Loyola Law School in 1996, Doug joined Kern & Wooley LLP, where he spent
five years representing aircraft and component manufacturers, including
Parker Hannifin Corporation and McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company, in
air crash litigation. He then joined the Aviation Practice Group of the
international law firm Paul Hastings, representing airlines in
regulatory and labor matters. In 2005 Doug started his own practice,
becoming an expert in the emerging commercial human spaceflight industry
and applying his aviation law expertise to the legal needs of that
sector.
Brian Harris
Director, Program and Marketplace Development, CASIS
Brian Harris, Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)
Director of Marketplace and Product Development, has
more than 25 years of experience in the management of NASA and
commercial aerospace hardware and technology systems development for
operational deployment, with expertise in the execution of strategic
business growth in engineering services, spacecraft development and
operations and associated ground support systems. Brian was involved
with the National Lab pathfinder program focused on microgravity
research in the areas of materials processing and vaccine development.
Steven Jorgenson
Co-founder and Current Portfolio Manager of the Viridian Fund
Steven Jorgenson has eleven years of professional money management
experience at the institutional level, having previously worked for
trading firms at the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chicago Board Options
Exchange, as a Member of the Chicago Stock Exchange, and as Portfolio
Manager of a private corporate bond fund. Mr. Jorgenson is the
co-founder and current Portfolio Manager of the Viridian Fund, a
Florida-based hedge fund specializing in equity options trading. Mr.
Jorgenson graduated with Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
with double majors in Bacteriology, and Biology, as well as a
Certificate of Business. Mr. Jorgenson is also a Director of the Space
Literacy Foundation, a member of the Space Angels Network, an active
angel investor in space-related businesses, and is eager to apply his
financial and business expertise directly to the challenges of the New
Space industry.
Aaron Kemmer
CEO,Made in Space, Inc.
Aaron Kemmer is a business manager, program developer, and entrepreneur from Clearwater, Florida. As a business owner, Kemmer currently serves as the CEO of Made in Space, Inc. and has served six years as the past President and Chairman of Semprove, Inc., a software, hardware, and publishing company. A graduate in Communication and Leadership from the University of Florida, Kemmer's roles include overseeing and managing projects involving dozens of contractors and employees.
He is the co-founder of Made in Space, Inc., where his responsibilities include strategic planning, program development, and systems management. Papers he has authored include "3D Printing in Space: Enabling New Markets and Accelerating the Growth of Orbital Infrastructure," which was featured at NASA's the Space Studies Institute 14th Space Manufacturing Conference in October 2010. He is an advisor to several companies, including SUpost, Movis, and YouTip. He is also serving as a 2012 TP Advisor for Singularity University based at NASA Research Park as well as a New Space 2012 Business Plan Advisor.
Jim Keravala
Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of Shackleton Energy Company Inc.
Jim has been a leader of international teams in the aerospace, finance,
and technology sectors for over 20 years. An expert in space systems and
infrastructure, Jim combines a deep knowledge of international business
and technology trends with practical expertise in building
cross-cultural teams that cut across diverse sectors. In the early
1990s, he was responsible for establishing a commercial space
development office in Moscow where he led a team of ten senior Russian
engineers and staff members. He helped lead the effort to transform the
Russian launch industry from centralized planning to free market
economics. In 1998, Jim became Launch Manager at the Surrey Space Centre
in England, handling launch operations for commercial and governmental
clients worldwide � including NASA, ESA, and the United States Air
Force. As part of the Surrey team he assisted emerging nations in
establishing local space capabilities � including engineering
facilities, spacecraft fabrication centers, and national space agencies.
In 2004, he left Surrey to lead cross-cultural teams that focused on
capital intensive projects in infrastructure finance, transport and
development. This executive experience gave Jim a unique perspective on
the establishment of large scale programs. Moving to Silicon Valley, Jim
raised venture capital for one of his companies and he is on the board
of space and software technology companies that he has cofounded. Jim is
also a member of Faculty at Singularity University for Technology
Synthesis and Mapping, Chairman of the American Institute of Aeronautics
and Astronautics San Francisco Section, a member of the Economics, and
Investment Committee of the International Astronautical Federation. In
2012 he was elected to the International Academy of Astronautics.
Michael Laine
President and Founder, LiftPort Inc
Mr. Laine has been involved with Terrestrial Space Elevator and Lunar
Space Elevator research since the 2001 NASA Institute for Advanced
Concepts study. He founded LiftPort Inc. shortly after the NIAC study.
LiftPort is focused on moving the space elevator concept forward. In
2012 he successfully lead a Kickstarter campaign to recapitalize
LiftPort that dramatically exceeded its goal and brought in over
$100,000 and the support of over 3,000 backers. Mr. Laine manages a
talented and diverse team from academia, government, commercial and
military communities. Mr. Laine was instrumental in the creation of the
NASA Centennial Challenges related to this idea, and years later, it was
his former team-members who won the competition. Mr. Laine�s business
acumen and management, coupled with his media, marketing and outreach
skills have transformed this project from an obscure NIAC paper study to
a real world program with tangible results. Mr. Laine is President of
the International Space University�s US Alumni Association, and a
Director with the Space Literacy Foundation, Leeward Space Foundation,
and ISDHub. He is currently enrolled in ISU�s MBA program. Mr. Laine
maintains an Advisor role with the International Space Elevator
Consortium. Mr. Laine served in the Marine Corps for several years where
he was meritoriously promoted, earned the Navy Achievement Medal, and
his unit was awarded the Marine Unit Citation. In addition to his space
activities Mr. Laine has experience in both the real estate and
investment arenas. He has owned and managed commercial real estate and
had discretionary trading authority over millions when handling
investments for clients.
Chris Lewicki
President and Chief Engineer, Planetary Resources
Mr. Lewicki has been intimately involved with the lifecycle of NASA's
Mars Exploration Rovers and the Phoenix Mars Lander. Lewicki performed
system engineering development and participated in assembly, test and
launch operations for both Mars missions. He was Flight Director for the
rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and the Surface Mission Manager for
Phoenix. The recipient of two NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals,
Lewicki has an asteroid named in his honor:
13609 Lewicki. Chris holds
bachelor's and master's degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the
University of Arizona. At Planetary Resources, Mr. Lewicki is
responsible for the strategic development of the company's mission and
vision, engagement with customers and the scientific community, serves
as technical compass, and leads day to day operations.
Ken Murphy
President, the Moon Society
Ken Murphy has over 20 years of experience in international banking and
finance, from an internship at Shearson Lehman Brothers that included a
stint in their Paris offices, to portfolio manager of a $1billion
portfolio of syndicated loans at Beal Bank. In between he worked his
way from teller at Marine Midland Bank to financial analyst at NatWest
Bank, credit analyst at Credit Lyonnais, and Wall Street analyst at
Banque Nationale de Paris. After a brief interlude Mr. Murphy returned
to the banking field as an investment analyst at CSG Investments, the IB
arm of Beal Bank. In 2012, he went independent. In 1999, as part of his
civic service in NYC Mr. Murphy put together a Model UN simulation on
the UN Outer Space Treaties, which led to his participation as a
delegate to the Space Generation Forum at the UNISPACE III conference in
Vienna. In 2000 he went to International Space University and in 2001
received a Masters degree in Space Studies, cum laude. His program
included an internship at Boeing�s Humans Spaceflight & Exploration
division, and an independent project on Cislunar Infrastructure
Architectures. In 2002 he served as program support for the NASA
Academy at Goddard Space Flight Center, and in 2003 joined the National
Space Society where he served a term on their Board of Directors. In
2007 he co-chaired the International Space Development Conference, and
in 2011 became president of The Moon Society. Mr. Murphy is a frequent
public speaker on the Moon, and organizes a Moon Day event in July each
year.
Thomas Andrew Olson
Founding Partner, Exodus Consulting Group.
For nearly three decades, Mr. Olson has been a business systems engineer
and analyst in the Communications, Aerospace, and Publishing sectors. In
addition, he has worked in an investment analysis and operations
capacity in the Financial Services area (cash and fund management). A
serial entrepreneur, he co-founded Exodus Group as a "catalyst" helping
tech startups and Angel/VC/Institutional investors find each other. He
served on the original organizing committee for the 'Space Investment
Summits', a semi-annual event that brought together interested investors
and space entrepreneurs for knowledge sharing and professional
networking. Exodus Group has been the project management contractor for
the Space Frontier Foundation's annual NewSpace Business Plan
Competition since 2011.
Bruce Pittman
Founder and President, Profit Engineering Technologies. Senior Vice President and Senior Operating Officer, NSS
Bruce Pittman is the founder and president of Profit Engineering
Technologies and is currently working as a contractor at NASA as the
Director of Flight Projects and Chief System Engineer in the NASA Space
Portal and the Emerging Space Office at the Ames Research Center in
Silicon Valley. In this position Mr. Pittman supports programs ranging
from suborbital human-tended research; orbital applications of the
International Space Station and other orbiting commercial facilities;
low cost, reliable access to space, reusable space infrastructure as
well as cis-lunar commercialization. He has been involved in high
technology system development, project management and system engineering
in a variety of industries for over 30 years.
Mr. Pittman has also been a founder and member of the startup team in a
number of early growth companies including SpaceHab, Kistler Aerospace,
New Focus, Product Factory, Prometheus II Ltd. and Industrial Sound and
Motion. As a consultant Mr. Pittman has worked with many Fortune 500
companies including Westinghouse, Northrop Grumman, Varian, Texas
Instruments, TRW and Boeing as well as government agencies including
NASA and DOE.
Mr. Pittman has a BS in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering from U. C.
Davis and a MS in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University.
Mr. Pittman is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and is the chairman of the AIAA
Commercial Space Group. In 2012 Mr. Pittman was elected to the Board of
Directors of the National Space Society (NSS) and in 2013 he was elected
as Senior Vice President and Senior Operating Officer of NSS. In
addition to his technical work Mr. Pittman has also been a member of the
adjunct faculty in the Graduate Engineering School at Santa Clara
University for over 25 years.
For his technical work Mr. Pittman has been awarded 2 NASA Special Achievement Awards, four NASA Group Achievement Awards. In 2011 NASA award him the Exceptional Public Service Medal for �exceptional leadership in pioneering the development of commercial space for public benefit�. In 2012 he was presented with the �Service to the Frontier� award by the Space Frontier Foundation.
Rick Sanford
President, SpaceGroundAmalgam, LLC. Partner, Hudson Fairfax Group
Rick is an executive leader with over 26 years of experience in solution development, market creation
and business development distinguished by double�]digit annual revenue growth for multinational
companies. He is an acknowledged thought leader with program, project and international team
leadership experience in the U.S., Germany, France, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, and
Japan. Rick is an expert at aligning technologies and process with business and mission objectives to
provide maximum return on investment.
Rick started his career in the United States Air Force, spent a decade working in engineering &
counter-narcotics programs with the U.S. Department of State, studied Computer Information
Systems at Strayer College and recently completed over 12 years with Cisco Systems, Inc. where he
was responsible for building the U.S. National Security business and founding the company's Space
business as part of the Global Government Solutions Group.
Further to his responsibilities at SGA, Rick is also a Partner with Hudson Fairfax Group; a strategic
investment firm specializing in business development and sales acceleration in cybersecurity,
intelligence, networks, space and defense.
Rick serves on the Board of the International Space University in Strasbourg France. He is a frequent
guest lecturer, keynote speaker, conference moderator and panelist and has been featured in
numerous articles in trade, national and international press.
Rand Simberg
President, Interglbal Media LLC
Rand Simberg is a recovering aerospace engineer with over a third of a
century of experience in the space industry, with multiple engineering
degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and West Coast
University in Los Angeles. Since 1993, after over a decade in
engineering and management at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo,
California and with Rockwell International in Downey, California, he has
been an entrepreneur and consultant in space technology, business
development, regulatory, and market issues relating to commercial and
personal spaceflight. An adjunct scholar with the Competitive
Enterprise Institute, he has written many pieces for Popular Mechanics,
Fox News, America Online, PJMedia, National Review, Reason magazine, The
Weekly Standard, the Washington Times, TCSDaily, and others, and
extensive essays on space policy and technology for the quarterly
journal The New Atlantis.

Jay Wittner
Board of Directors, National Space Society
Jay Wittner has been a member of the National Space Society and other
space advocacy groups since 1986. After joining the NSS Board of
Directors in 2000, he has served NSS in several capacities: Vice
President of Membership, and member of the Executive Committee and Buzz
Aldrin Council. Since attending his first ISDC in 1989, he has
participated in over a dozen of the Society's annual conferences.
He serves as Executive Director of the Space Literacy Foundation (SLF).
The SLF is a non-profit organization that works to educate the public
about the benefits of space exploration and development. The SLF works
with planetariums, science museums, space advocacy groups, and other
groups focused on space related activities. The SLF provides these
groups with space education content and equips them with cutting edge
video communications tools they can use to educate the public about
space. The SLF also provides advice and assistance regarding best
practices for member communications and development activities.
